A personal statement is a type of essay, usually a requirement for admission to a university or a company, that details the individual’s academic or research goals. It is used by the admissions committee to evaluate the applicant’s capabilities, analytical skills, interests, and goals.
Both Oxford and Cambridge universities maintain a high standard of admittance for their students. These criteria are applied in the exams and interviews students go through for admission. The same standards are used when evaluating an applicant’s personal statement. Personal statements for these universities should:
- Express the student’s interest in studying in the university
- Detail the field of study the student is interested in
- Show any job or work experience that is applicable or relevant to the chosen field
- Demonstrate or discuss any skills, both academic and non-academic, the student may have
- Mention any type of sponsorship the student may have
- Discuss the student’s plans for the future
Now, not everyone has the skills to write a convincing personal statement – one that would compel the admissions committee to have a closer look at the applicant. Many students, in fact, find this part of the application process to be rather difficult. Students who do not have a lot of creative writing experience may find the personal statement somewhat overwhelming. Thankfully though, there is help available. There are some companies that offer assistance in writing personal statements. Now, it is not to say that students should go out and purchase a custom personal statement and hand it in as their own. Students, especially those who wish to gain admission into one of the most prestigious universities in the UK, should earn their admittance.
Getting assistance is fine, however, students should use this ‘help’ responsibly. It is strongly recommended for students to make their own personal statements, maybe even using the output from UK essay providers as a guide. This will ensure that, if admitted into the university, the student got in on their own merit, making the journey even more rewarding.
